Keep On Moving
A meaningful phrase I
heard many years ago is appropriate to remember as the year 2008
becomes history and the New Year approaches.
“Rains and trains wait for no man; if you want to
keep dry and arrive on time, you have to keep moving.”

Journalists wrote
that General George S. Patton, Jr., the great military leader
continually repeated a motto at the beginning of every battle.
“Start
moving and keep advancing!”
His “Keep Advancing”
slogan encouraged the Allied Troops in World War II and won him a
place among the greatest generals of all time. The principle is
true about God’s army – we must keep advancing!
Joaquin Miller wrote
the inspirational poem “Columbus.” When Columbus was almost
overcome with adversity, he would say to his crew,
“Sail on, sail on and on and on.”
His “keep moving”
policy enabled him to discover a great new continent. This attitude
can also aid Christians to look for new opportunities to serve and
grow.
Thousands of years
ago, the children of Israel began their exodus from slavery in the
land of Egypt to escape from horrible circumstances, but they came
to a halt at the shore of the Red Sea. Perceiving the Red Sea as an
impossible barrier, the people complained that it would have been
better to die in Egypt. Moses urged the people not to be afraid; he
told them God would deliver them, and advised them to “only be
still.” There is a time to pause and make assessments before taking
steps; but no one should place life in park. God spoke to Moses
saying,
“Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites
to move on.” (Exodus 14:15)
What kinds of events
impacted your life this year? Undoubtedly some events were pleasant
and positive, but you probably encountered your share of negative
circumstances. Every event in life brings transition as we adjust
and move from one stage to another; in fact, life itself is a
transition as we prepare for eternity. For Central to move forward,
each of us needs to pause to get our bearing, but let’s not park!
We need to examine
ways in which we can be useful to God’s kingdom in 2009, remembering
that
“Rains and trains wait for no man; if you want to
keep dry and arrive on time, keep on moving.”
