In 2003,
Catherine Roberts of Seaford, DE, started the Quilts of Valor
Foundation when her son and his 630th MP Company were being
deployed from Germany to Iraq for one year. She was thrown into
a group of other Americans who send their loved one into harm’s
way. She started the group by appealing to both quilt-toppers
and the longarming group to volunteer their fabric, their
talents and time to make wartime quilts of valor that would
comfort our wounded. Presently, our Quilts of Valor community
has delivered over 15,000 quilts. We are only one of many that
make quilts to comfort our wounded and the families who have
lost their loved one in this war on terror.
The mission of the QOV Foundation is to cover ALL wounded and
injured service members from the War on Terror, whether physical
or psychologically, with wartime quilts called
Quilts of Valor (QOV). QOVF-UM covers the Upper Midwestern
states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin
and is part of the national
Quilts of Valor Foundation.
If you know of someone who should receive a QOV, please

Betty Smith is the local coordinator for
the Quilts of Valor Foundation. This is a group of quilters
nationwide who make quilts for the military men and women who
have been wounded in the defense of our country. These quilts
have been given to service people in Ft. Bragg, NC, San Antonio,
Texas; Walter Reed Hospital and oversees.
Quilts are made by volunteers. Some
purchase the fabric and make "kits" to sew the top and back.
They are then sent to a person who has a long-arm quilter. This
person will add the batting and quilt the pieces together. This
is a nation- wide effort by citizens who wish to support our
troops. The many ways to support this project is by financial
contribution, washing and ironing of fabric, sewing the top and
back. Packing and shipping.
