Ephesians 3 ends with great encouragement concerning the love of God through Christ and even a powerful prayer Paul prays over the church. Paul takes this encouragement to lead directly into the next part of his letter that moves us to living “a life worthy of the calling you have received”. Paul expects us to take action! What action? To be completely humble, gentle, patient, to bear with each other in love. To do everything possible to keep unity and peace.
These aren’t strong actions. Most of these almost seem more like inaction. They bring to mind sitting back and being steamrolled, ignored, even taken advantage of. But Paul is clear that focusing on peace and unity is living into the calling God gave us! Look at any story in the Gospels about Jesus and you’ll get a perfect idea of what it looks like to live into this calling. And Jesus is NEVER steamrolled. He lifts others up through mercy and grace, He stands up for injustice through silence and peace, and He gently guides sinners to conviction and repentance. The times we see Jesus react with anger and judgement are the times when someone is using the name of God to divide, create anxiety, justify a high position, or even take advantage of someone. Choose to live into your calling today through peaceful humility that leads to unity!
