Ten Commandments

When was the last time you read the Ten Commandments? I remember this being a really big deal when I was a little kid and I was challenged to memorize all of them and even learned skits and hand movements to be able to recite them easily. I’ve rediscovered the Ten Commandments at different points in my life. As a teen I remember hearing them as more than something to memorize but to also live by and use a guiding post for how God desired for me to live. In College I remember coming to a point where I realized that many of the commands were for my own good. They weren’t just random things God chose to hold over us and expect us to follow; instead, by following them, I lived a better and healthier life with stronger relationships. Recently I have explored them from the perspective of a relationship. God loves us, and like any good relationship He wants to know us and He wants us to know Him. Our prayers should be full of our daily highs and lows because God wants to rejoice with us and comfort us. The Ten Commandments were a way for God to share a little bit of Himself with us in a way we could understand. They help us understand that He is holy and jealous for us. They help us understand that He is a just and fair and compassionate God. That He honors authority and honesty. Read Exodus 20 and make a list of ways they help you better understand God.
